Background

Literary Context: The Twisted Series

Twisted Love is the first in a quartet. Each novel in the series follows a separate love story and develops the lives of four mutual friends: Ava Chen (Twisted Love, 2021), Bridget von Ascheberg (Twisted Games, 2021), Jules Ambrose (Twisted Hate, 2022), and Stella Alonso (Twisted Lies, 2022). Because later installments contain spoilers for previous books, Ana Huang recommends reading the books in series order for the best experience. However, the Twisted novels are interconnected standalones and can also be read out of order or by themselves.

In Twisted Love, Huang briefly introduces Bridget and her new bodyguard, Rhys Larsen. Bridget is the princess of a wealthy European country called Eldorra. Rhys is described as gruff and arrogant; he sports black hair, gray eyes, a broad muscled frame, and a jagged scar slashing through his left eyebrow. Rhys’s overprotectiveness frustrates Bridget, although Ava notes that Bridget rarely lets this emotion show. The second installment in the Twisted series, Twisted Games, follows Bridget’s love story with Rhys as she also grapples with becoming first in line to the throne of Eldorra. The full chronology of Bridget’s story takes place over four years, with Part 1 occurring simultaneously with the Twisted Love timeline, and Part 2 taking place after Twisted Love.

Twisted Love also introduces Jules and Josh, who later develop a romance in Twisted Lies, the third installment in the Twisted series. Although Stella gets the least attention in Twisted Love, her character eventually gets a chance to shine when she gains a new love interest in Twisted Lies, the final installment of the Twisted series. Ava and Alex’s relationship continues to develop throughout the series, and though they are not the main characters in future installments, the narrative continues to provide information about how their relationship progresses after the events of the first novel conclude.

Genre Context: New Adult

First coined in 2009 by St. Martin’s Press, new adult fiction is a developing genre that falls between young adult and adult. The genre targets readers age 18 to 25 and highlights coming-of-age stories that focus on themes of character development that occur after the teen years. While new adult fiction contains elements common to the young adult genre—fast-paced, emotionally turbulent writing styles—the new adult genre often contains more explicit content and more complex thematic elements and features adult-oriented settings such as college campuses, beginner workplaces, or new hometowns. New adult fiction also primarily focuses on milestones: a character’s first great love, first home, or first true taste of adulthood. These elements make the stories and their characters highly relatable to the 18- to 25-year-old age group. The genre strives to be edgy, daring, and exciting while showcasing the serious pressures of adulthood.

Because traditional publishing houses considered the genre to be too high a risk to invest in seriously, the new adult genre owes its existence to self-publishing. Prior to 2009, traditional publishers were hesitant to pursue new adult novels and categorize them as such because the long-term success of the genre seemed uncertain at best. Common fears were that the addition of the category would negatively impact young adult sales, which were phenomenally high thanks to huge franchises like Stephanie Meyer's Twilight and Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games. However, self-published new adult romances such as Jamie McGuire’s Beautiful Disaster and Molly McAdams’s Taking Chances soon became bestsellers. With the emergence of a segment of TikTok called BookTok that is designed to highlight indie authors, the genre gained major traction. Since the surge of interest and sales in new adult novels, traditional publishers have acquired many of the most successful titles and are continuously working to broaden their catalogs in the genre.

Cultural Context: Indie Authors on TikTok

TikTok’s BookTok hashtag has a major impact on book sales, publicity, and author platforms. Huang’s Twisted series is an example of TikTok’s massive reach and its effect on self-published indie authors. As discussed above, the Twisted series is a new adult romance, a genre and age category that was not widely accepted by traditional publishers prior to the 2010s and 2020s. Indie authors are motivated to self-publish to retain full control of their novels and avoid being regulated by traditional publishers who cannot appreciate the marketing potential of the stories as written.

Because the Twisted series is firmly entrenched in the somewhat experimental new adult fiction genre, it might have faced complications had Huang opted for the traditional publishing route. However, Huang typically prefers the flexibility and control of self-publishing. With several self-published books under her belt, such as her If Love series, Huang self-published Twisted Love in April 2021. After gaining significant traction on TikTok, with over 400 million views under the TikTok hashtag #twistedseries, the Twisted series was later picked up in the UK by Piatkus (an imprint of Little, Brown) and in the US by Bloom Books (an imprint of Sourcebooks) and republished traditionally in 2022.

Massive fanbases on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter all play a significant role in the specifics of each individual traditional publishing deal, as marketing and publicity is a vital element of successful publishing. This almost-certain marketing and publicity success makes it easier for traditional publishers to risk acquiring the rights for indie works, and repackaging and republishing them. Several indie authors have experienced similar trajectories to Huang’s, such as Scarlett St. Clair and Raven Kennedy.
