Chapter 33 Summary

Maggie awakes in darkness, confused, before falling back asleep. When she wakes again, Kai cares for her before she falls back asleep. Waking for the third time, Maggie realizes that they are at Grace’s, and she sees that Kai is suffering using his clan powers to heal her. Maggie leaves the bedroom to find Grace with the Thirsty Boys, whom Grace summoned to help Maggie. Clive explains that at the end of Maggie’s fight with Neizghání, lightning struck Mósí’s box, and Kai rescued Maggie. Kai and Maggie know now that they have to go after Neizghání. Even though the others think that he is a hero, it is clear that Neizghání is somehow involved with the tsé naayéé’. Maggie knows that Neizghání will be at Black Mesa, the mine where he abandoned her. When everyone prepares to leave for battle, Maggie ruminates over Neizghání’s confusing actions—kissing her and asking her to return while they fight. Kai flirts with Maggie, asking how she feels. Maggie says that she is run down, and she reveals that she used to love Neizghání. Kai thinks her troubled spirit interfered with her healing, but he tells her that “love’s not supposed to try to kill you” (253). Then Maggie and Kai kiss, and to Maggie, “Kai’s kiss itself is curative” (254). The kiss overwhelms Maggie, however, and Kai says that they can move slowly. Maggie inspects the brand-like scar left from Neizghání’s wound. Kai, on the other hand, promises to always remain on Maggie’s side, and he reveals that he now knows how to use Coyote’s directional hoops to defeat Neizghání.

Chapter 34 Summary

Maggie heads off to battle with Kai, Rissa, Clive, Hastiin, and a group of 30 Thirsty Boys. On their way to the mine, they pass the southern Wall, a 50-foot-high wall of turquoise built by the Diné after the Big Water. The sky above the mine looks green, an image that Maggie explains is like a dream she had in which Neizghání dressed as a witch. Rissa reports that there is no one at the mine, but then lightning strikes. Maggie and Kai head into battle, and Maggie finally declares them to be partners. When Maggie reaches the top of the mine’s tower, Coyote announces his presence.

Chapter 35 Summary

Now Maggie accuses Coyote of collaborating with Neizghání. A hundred tsé naayéé’ charge the rest of the group, but Kai calls fire down upon them. Kai runs out of power, but more monsters appear. Neizghání appears suddenly and begins to kill monsters. Coyote stops Maggie from helping, instead revealing to her, “I made them all. They are all my monsters, Magdalena. From the very beginning” (265) While at first Maggie thinks this refers to just the tsé naayéé’, it in fact refers to every monster Maggie has ever faced. Coyote says that he brought Neizghání and Maggie together to awaken her powers and make her great, and he adds that Neizghání does love Maggie, as much as he can. Maggie is distraught at the betrayal, and she shoots Coyote in the head.

Chapter 36 Summary

Maggie joins her friends in the fight. Her accomplices have captured Neizghání, unaware of Coyote’s deception. Maggie tells Neizghání to leave, but he refuses, still believing Kai at least to be a threat. Neizghání then attempts to get Maggie to rejoin his side by revealing that Kai has betrayed her too. Maggie demands the truth from Kai, who reveals that his true clan power is Bit’ąą’nii, the ability to talk others into doing what he wants. This additional betrayal sickens Maggie, who feels used. Kai, who knew that one day a monsterslayer would come for him, decided to befriend Maggie in case she was that monsterslayer. He explains, “sometimes you defeat your enemies by making them your friends” (274). Eventually, he says, his feelings for Maggie became real. Neizghání wants Maggie to kill Kai, but she stalls for time while coming up with a plan. Without revealing that plan to the reader, she shoots Kai in the heart.

Chapter 37 Summary

Neizghání is amused that Maggie killed Kai. He tells Maggie that it is better for Kai to be dead and that he kissed her in the arena because he thinks she is magnificent. Maggie is tempted to rejoin Neizghání, but she decides she wants something more than bloodshed in her life. She takes out the directional hoops and shoots Neizghání to slow him down, putting the hoops around him to trap him and saying, “When I kissed you, all I tasted was death. And I think I want more than that, Neizghání. I think I want life, too. And love. A love that doesn’t try to kill me” (281). In doing this, Maggie chooses herself over Neizghání. However, when Maggie turns around, Rissa points her gun at Maggie and orders her to leave. In her view, Maggie betrayed and killed Kai, even though Maggie thinks Kai will recover. Maggie leaves.

Chapter 38 Summary

Five days later, Maggie is back near her trailer. She does not approach the trailer at first, thinking that there is someone inside and that it might be Tah. Facing Tah seems to be too much for Maggie after what she did for Kai, and Maggie also suspects that Neizghání will eventually come for her. Tah comes out of the trailer, revealing himself, and Maggie reluctantly goes to see him. Tah says that they will wait for Kai together.

Chapters 33-38 Analysis

tells her that love should not kill, Maggie admits to herself, “I know he’s right” (253). Even though she knows she cannot turn off her feelings for Neizghání overnight, she feels that she now has room in her heart to let others in. When Kai and Maggie kiss, she thinks, “Kai’s kiss itself is a curative” (254). Maggie might still bear the traces of old injuries, but she is on the mend, ready to move on with her life. This newfound willingness to let others in is affirmed shortly after when Maggie finds that even more people support her in her battles against the tsé naayéé’. Not only do Kai, Rissa, and Clive follow her into final battle, but Hastiin and the Thirsty Boys join as well, representing the social support Maggie always had, even when she could not recognize it.

At the final battle, Maggie’s personal growth and new appreciation for love survive one last temptation by Neizghání. Neizghání reveals to Maggie that Kai has betrayed her. However, Kai and Maggie’s relationship is still built on truer ground than Maggie and Neizghání’s ever was. Much to Neizghání’s surprise, Maggie will not discard Kai as easily as Neizghání did her. When Neizghání offers Maggie his hand, Maggie is tempted by the remnants of her old feelings for her former mentor. However, she realizes, “there’s something I want more than Neizghání. Even more than Kai” (280). Maggie captures Neizghání and tells him, “I think I want life, too. And love. A love that doesn’t try to kill me” (281). This love does include Maggie’s love for Kai, but more importantly, it includes her self-love. Rather than simply choosing between two men, Maggie has chosen to live a healthier life for herself. This just happens to include Kai, who represents a far healthier form of romantic love than Maggie could ever have hoped for with Neizghání.

In the final chapter, Maggie finds the new core of her family. She initially fears failing Tah when she returns to her trailer. However, Tah welcomes her home, saying, “come on home, shí daughter […] We’ll wait for him together” (285). In calling Maggie his daughter, Tah affirms that he still thinks of Maggie as his family, even if they are not biologically related. He includes Kai in this family, too, telling Maggie that they will both wait for him to return. Maggie is now in the opposite of the state she was in at the beginning of the book. Then she was alone, both by her own volition and by the fear of others. Now, she welcomes family.
