Prior to the start of Chapter 21, facts about Abigail Lovett’s appearance in Cutter’s Pass are supplied in a fact sheet. Abby first arrived in Cutter’s Pass on Main Street on January 7, 2013, outside the Last Stop Tavern.
Abby’s mother revealed the name of Abby’s father shortly before passing away. She told Abby that Neil was a member of the Fraternity Four and that she had met the group of men while they vacationed in Tennessee. Until Celeste’s confession, Abby believed Neil intentionally disappeared to escape unwanted fatherhood. Abby traveled to Cutter’s Pass on icy mountain roads, assuming no one would notice if she disappeared. Celeste tried to turn Abby away when Abby initially sought refuge at the inn, also requesting a job. Upon learning Abby’s name and that her mother had recently died, Celeste decided to shelter and care for Abby to atone for her involvement in the disappearance of Abby’s father. Abby never questioned Celeste’s decision to lie to the people of Cutter’s Pass about a family relationship between Abby and Celeste.
Back in the present, Celeste confesses to killing Brian out of self-defense. While Neil pleaded for his life, Celeste jumped for Brian’s gun, causing him to shoot Neil. Celeste successfully gained possession of the gun and killed Brian. She tended to Neil’s gunshot wound before rushing back to the inn for help. Worried and waiting for Celeste at the inn, Patrick summoned Vincent from his business trip. Celeste kept appearances at the inn while Patrick and Vincent hid all evidence of the crimes. Celeste tells Abby that she, Vincent, and Patrick never spoke of the incident after it occurred. Celeste reasons that she and Patrick would have suffered tremendously for Brian’s crimes if they confessed the truth to investigators. Cutter’s Pass and the townspeople and businesses would disappear after a quadruple homicide. Celeste says she hikes daily, leaving cut flowers and cairns along the Shallow Falls trail, to pray for the deceased men.
Abby sees the inner circle of Cutter’s Pass differently. She reflects on how Patrick and Celeste are “bound by trauma, as opposed to love” (288), altering her view of what it means to be a true insider. Celeste admits to wondering how much Abby knew about her father but felt it was best to look forward and not speak of the past. Abby asks about Alice, Farrah, and Landon, believing there to be a connection between their disappearances and the Fraternity Four. Celeste has no information about their disappearances and thinks they are entirely unconnected.
Later, Harris arrives as Abby locks up the inn’s front office. He acknowledges the late hour but asks to look at the phone lines. Abby receives a private Instagram message from Quinn, and Harris inquires with whom Abby is speaking so late. She confesses she is talking with Alice’s sister. Quinn sends Abby a picture of Alice with her hiking friends (Lucy, James, and Caroline).
Abby recognizes James as Harris. She checks an old receipt from Harris, noticing “J.” before his name. Quinn tells Abby that James was Alice’s ex-boyfriend and mentions how the hikers in Alice’s group were never questioned since Cory saw Alice in Cutter’s Pass. Knowing Cory lied about seeing Alice, Abby now knows Alice’s last known location was on the Shallow Falls trail, with James (Harris). Abby recalls the number in Landon’s notebook for James and recognizes the woman’s voice as Samantha, Harris’s wife. Abby calls her, and Samantha confirms that Harris’s first name is James, though he never uses the family name. Harris interrupts Abby’s call to Samantha, assertively asking her to come outside. In a panic, Abby texts Rochelle, asking her to contact Patrick and send him to the inn. She tells Rochelle that Harris is responsible for Alice’s disappearance. She leaves her cell phone on the inn’s windowsill, unsure if she has any cell signal. Abby grabs a fire poker on her way to the lobby’s main door.
Abby attempts to lock Harris out of the inn; however, Harris quickly finds his way inside through the employee entrance with a stolen key. Abby shuts off all lights, hoping to hide from Harris, but she hears him move closer. Abby appeals to Harris’s humanity, telling him she just got off the phone with Samantha. This alarms Harris, and Abby asks him questions about Alice.
Harris confesses to killing Alice, claiming it was an accident. He confronted Alice at Shallow Falls about their breakup, and Harris claims Alice slipped on a wet rock and hit her head. Harris also admits that Farrah knew Alice and Harris from a nature photography group, and he killed Farrah when she came to Cutter’s Pass in hopes of figuring out what happened to Alice. He admits to killing Landon for the same reason.
Trey appears, escalating the situation by assertively demanding that Harris explain what he did to Landon. Trey shines a light from his cell phone on Harris, illuminating Harris’s gun pointed at Abby. A struggle ensues, and Abby hits Harris with her fire poker. Harris drops his gun, which Trey recovers and aims at Harris. Patrick, Rochelle, Jack, Cory, Marina, Ray, and Celeste appear, deescalating the situation. Celeste grabs Abby, leading her away from the group.
At the sheriff’s office, Patrick asks Abby to reveal how she came across Landon’s notebook, his cell phone, and Farrah’s camera. Abby refuses to implicate Georgia, but she gives as much information as possible. She asks Patrick where the graves of the Fraternity Four are, but Patrick explains how Vincent buried the bodies while Patrick handled the bullets, blood, and other evidence.
Trey tells Abby he wants Landon’s notebook, but Abby plans to destroy it along with the rest of the evidence to protect Patrick, Vincent, Celeste, and all other people of Cutter’s Pass.
The narrative jumps ahead several months. Harris confesses to killing Alice, Farrah, and Landon and is imprisoned. Samantha retreats to her family’s home in Florida with Elsie. Harris’s confession brings media attention to Cutter’s Pass again, and, consequently, tourists flock to the town. The disappearance of the Fraternity Four remains a mystery to outsiders.
Georgia visits Abby at the inn, apologizing for her secrecy and doubt in Abby. The women make amends and part on good terms. A young woman from Cutter’s Pass fills Georgia’s position. Abby takes more of a leadership role at the inn, referencing plans for the establishment. Abby leads a group of hikers to Shallow Falls. They ask questions about the Fraternity Four, and Abby answers confidently as an authority figure in Cutter’s Pass.
Celeste rounds out the theme of Closure Amid Loss and Grief when she describes her traumatic experience with the Fraternity Four and what Abby’s presence truly means. Celeste’s daily hikes take on new meaning when she tells Abby, “‘On the mountain? Yes, I assume. I pay my respects, as often as I can.’ Up and on that mountain every day before dawn. A cairn, a grave marker, at the sight of their deaths. A flower cut from her garden…” (287). Celeste demonstrates remorse for her involvement with the Fraternity Four. While she justifies killing Brian in self-defense, Celeste demonstrates an awareness of the pain she causes the families with unanswered questions about the four men. As Neil’s daughter, Abby is one of those people. Celeste’s dedication to Abby in claiming her as a relative exemplifies Celeste’s desire to right a wrong and make sense of Neil, Brian, Jerome, and Toby’s needless deaths.
Patrick and Celeste’s loyalty to each other over the decades exemplifies how the natural Desire for Human Connection is above the law. Abby’s decision to destroy all evidence, including Landon’s journal and cell phone, proves her loyalty to Cutter’s Pass and solidifies her position as an insider: “I couldn’t give him the phone, the journal. They had to go. The photo over the bar, even. […] ‘Why are you protecting them?’ But how to even begin; it would take ten years to make him understand” (311-12). Landon cannot fathom why Abby chooses to protect Celeste, Patrick, and the other insiders of Cutter’s Pass because he fails to recognize how firmly loyal the people in town are to each other. Abby finds this loyalty invaluable and an essential part of her identity. When Rochelle, Patrick, Celeste, Cory, Marina, and Ray arrive at the inn to protect Abby, Abby realizes that she is as much a part of Cutter’s Pass as the community is a part of her. If Abby were to disappear from Cutter’s Pass in the middle of the night (like Georgia), her absence would be felt, and the locals would miss her.
Conversely, Harris uses the close-knit, secretive community to his advantage to hide in plain sight from his crimes. Harris’s decision to return to Cutter’s Pass with Samantha and Elsie years after he killed Alice demonstrates how Harris knew about and exploited the local’s blind trust in Harris as an insider. Harris recalls the aftermath of killing Alice: “[W]e could all pretend she was still out there somewhere. It’s better that way, Abby. No one even asked me one question” (304). The way Harris hides behind the guarded nature of the people of Cutter’s Pass exemplifies How Secrets Connect and Divide Small Communities. Harris can live in Cutter’s Pass and ensure that the truth about his crimes never becomes known partially because he knows the people in town won’t question him, even if they suspect his connection to Alice.
