Chapter 31 Summary

DeVasher meets with Nathan and Oliver, telling them that he believes that Abby’s visit to her parents is a lie. He cannot find any evidence that her mother was in the hospital. He also tells them about the copies Mitch made on the fourth floor and billed to multiple accounts that include not only his accounts, but some of Lamar’s and Avery’s clients. Oliver and Nathan blow off DeVasher’s concerns, however, Lou does not. Lou wants Avery placed on a 60 day leave of absence, and he tells DeVasher he wants Mitch to die in an explosion aboard the firm’s Lear jet. However, he is willing to wait until his contact in the FBI confirms Mitch’s relationship with them.

On Saturday, Mitch visits Ray and tells him he will be released soon by speaking to him in Spanish. However, he is not able to give him many details. After his visit with Ray, Mitch goes to a mall in Nashville, leaving his keys in the BMW. He changes his shirt and slips out of the mall through a different door and takes a cab to Tammy’s rented apartment. Abby is waiting for him there.

Chapter 32 Summary

Mitch visits Avery in the hospital. Avery claims to have suffered a small heart attack that will require him to take two months off work. Mitch doesn’t believe him, and it worries him that it might mean someone at the firm is on to his activities involving the FBI. Mitch goes upstairs in the hospital where he meets with Wayne. He tells Wayne how his car got stolen so that now he has a car with no bugs in it. Mitch tells Wayne that he’s gotten all the files he can for the FBI. There are more files in the basement where he believes most of the illegal banking transactions take place, but the basement is too tightly locked up for him to get any files out.

Chapter 33 Summary

Oliver tells Mitch he has been assigned to another partner. He also asks if Mitch could handle a trip to the Cayman Islands in Avery’s place the following week. Mitch agrees. Mitch goes to visit Tammy in her office, asking her to arrange for new IDs for him, Abby, and Ray. He also asks for a camcorder and a case of tapes.

Ray is walked out of his cell by a guard a little before midnight. The guard tells him he must have friends in high places, then explains that the warden himself planned his escape. He will climb over the wall with “a ladder up there” (401) that the guards will drop and meet a man on the other side. Ray is nervous but manages to get out safely. He asks to be taken to Knoxville.

Chapter 34 Summary

Tarry arrives at a hotel to meet with Vinnie. He is extremely nervous and barely gets out that Mitch is talking to the FBI, and that he is ready to turn over some incriminating files. Vinnie pays Tarry and sends him out the door as he calls Lou. Tarry is barely halfway down the hall when someone grabs him. FBI director Voyles confronts Tarry and insists on knowing what information he just sold. Tarry reluctantly tells him that it was about Mitch.

DeVasher tells the partners that Mitch is working with the FBI. Mitch is due to fly to the Caymans in a few hours, so they agree that it is time to kill him. At the same time, Wayne takes a call from Voyles and learns that Mitch has been made. Wayne calls Mitch and gives him a prearranged code that lets him know he is in danger. Mitch quickly leaves the building, but he is followed into a local hotel by DeVasher’s people. He manages to get away by hiding in the dressing room of a gift shop. He calls Wayne and tells him he’s leaving town. He also calls Tammy and gives her a message for Abby, instructing her to leave town, too. He buys multiple plane tickets under his own name, and purchases a ticket in cash under another name and flies to Cincinnati.

Lou arrives in Memphis and instructs the partners to stake out all the major airports to find Mitch. He sends DeVasher’s people to Kentucky to retrieve Abby. The FBI do the same thing in their attempt to find Mitch.

Chapter 35 Summary

Ray travels by Greyhound to Mobile, Alabama, with two FBI agents following in a car. Abby takes a flight from Huntington to Atlanta, recognizing a woman on board she saw following her and Mitch in the Cayman Islands. Mitch arrives in Cincinnati and hops another plane to Nashville. There he rents a U-Haul and fills it with the files in Tammy’s apartment. The FBI agents following Ray call to say they’ve lost him, only to be told that it is essential they find him again.

Ray has checked into a motel in Perdido Beach. Mitch calls to let him know Abby is on her way and that he should watch for anyone following her. When Abby arrives, a blonde woman arrives minutes behind her. Ray breaks into her hotel room and ties her up, leaving her under the motel bed. Ray and Abby talk briefly to Mitch and run for Panama City Beach, Florida.

Chapters 31-35 Analysis

Mitch’s unfortunate choice of using the copy machine outside Avery’s office has given DeVasher the fuel he needs to arrange Mitch’s death in a plane accident. However, he agrees to wait until the FBI mole confirms Mitch’s betrayal. Not long after, the mole comes through and Mitch’s role with the FBI is revealed. DeVasher believes he can contain the situation since Mitch is scheduled to board the Lear jet later that day, but he fails to consider that the FBI might be aware of the mole. Everything comes to a disastrous climax as DeVasher enjoys being right, but Wayne plays the hero and warns Mitch. Mitch, who has proven his intelligence from the beginning, outsmarts DeVasher’s people, as well as the FBI, and gets out of town right under their noses.

Mitch’s plan still is not revealed but the mole confirmed Mitch’s concerns about the FBI and caused him to decide against trusting them to protect himself and Abby. While the FBI did get his brother out of prison, Mitch doles out orders to Tammy that make it clear he has no intention for himself, Ray, or Abby to be taken into FBI custody. Trust is an issue for Mitch, although he is the only one to have broken it in his relationship with Abby.

Ray and Abby are quickly on the run, but Abby is followed. Ray’s past comes into play, and he becomes Abby’s protector, using his penchant for violence in a benevolent way to protect her from her shadow. Ray’s abilities are why Mitch has sent Abby to Ray rather than directed her to where he is. Abby and Ray flee, following Mitch’s instructions to travel to Florida. Mitch would choose Panama City Beach for their rendezvous, as he has recently been there, he has family in the area, and can use the location to his advantage.
