DeVasher meets with Oliver and Nathan again, claiming he calmed Lou over the firing of their four associates, but that he still believes Mitch is lying. He wants to increase surveillance o Mitch. At the same time, Lou meets with a member of the Palumbo family to ask that they get information from one of their sources. The Palumbo family has a mole in the FBI who is “very close to Voyles” (325) and Lou hopes the man will give them information on whether Mitch is speaking to the FBI. He agrees to pay half a million dollars for the information.

Chapter 27 Summary

Abby arrives unexpectedly at Mitch’s office and announces that her mother has been diagnosed with a tumor in her lung. Abby is going to stay with her parents for the foreseeable future. DeVasher’s people listen to the conversation and conclude that Abby is leaving Mitch. However, instead of going to Tennessee to her parents, Abby goes to Grand Cayman.

Avery is in Grand Cayman and is approached at a bar called Rumheads, by Tammy. They flirt, have dinner together, and end up in the firm’s condo. Tammy drugs Avery, causing him to fall asleep. Tammy uses Avery’s keys to enter a room on the first floor of the condo where there are multiple filing cabinets full of files. Tammy takes Avery’s briefcases to a hotel room in the resort next door where Abby is waiting with a copy machine. They work all night copying the files in the briefcases and in the file cabinets. Abby also has all of Avery’s keys copied. They successfully copy all the files and return them to their proper place while Avery is at work. Afterward, they store the copies in a storage facility in Georgetown, Grand Cayman.

Chapter 28 Summary

Wayne boards a Greyhound expecting to meet with Mitch but discovers Abby aboard instead. Abby tells Wayne that Mitch is willing to turn over his client files, including sections of a file denoting illegal activity, but only after the first million dollars is delivered to a specific bank account in Freeport, Bahamas. Wayne reluctantly agrees. He also agrees to continue to find a way to release Ray from prison under the guise of an escape. At the same time, Tammy completes one of multiple trips from the Cayman Islands through Miami to Memphis with luggage full of paper files.

Vinnie Cozzo, a member of the Palumbo family, meets with Tarry Ross, their mole inside the FBI. He promises Tarry $200,000 in exchange for any information about Mitch’s relationship with the FBI. Although Tarry already has the information Vinnie wants, he asks for two weeks to gather it.

Chapter 29 Summary

During the week before April 15, the tax return deadline, Avery goes out of town to soothe one of his clients. In the middle of the night, Mitch uses the copied keys Abby took of Avery’s keys to enter Avery’s office. He makes copies of some of his files using codes from cases on which he is currently working.

On April 15, the Bendini, Lambert & Locke firm throws a dinner at a local restaurant for their lawyers. Mitch attends but leaves early. At the Bendini building, the cleaning crew comes in to clean. Tammy is part of the crew and on this night, she is allowed into the security section.

Chapter 30 Summary

Mitch and Abby have a strained conversation over the phone before Mitch goes for a run at a local high school track. Wayne is waiting for him, and they discuss the files Tammy and Abby copied in the Cayman Islands. Mitch gives Wayne just enough to prove that the files will be worth the additional million dollars Mitch wants. He promises Wayne the files will be ready for delivery in a few weeks. However, Mitch insists that Ray be out of jail before he hands over the files.

Chapters 26-30 Analysis

DeVasher is convinced that Mitch is working with the FBI and is unhappy with the named partners and their reluctance to agree with him. Not only that, but the partners are also refusing to fire four employees of the firm who are unaware of the Morolto connection to protect the firm from another incident as the one that is playing out with Mitch. For this reason, DeVasher encourages Leo to take the step of approaching a mole in the FBI to find out for sure if Mitch is working with them. This move demonstrates that DeVasher does not have as much control over the firm as he would like.

Abby makes an excuse to leave Mitch that DeVasher and his team overhear, using the space this move gives her to help Mitch more actively with his plan. Abby travels to the Cayman Islands with Tammy to copy files from a hidden room in one of the firm’s condos. The operation is dangerous and could blow their whole plan, but it works out perfectly. Abby plays as a go-between with Wayne, making final agreements on their deal before handing over the location of the first set of files.

While Tammy and Abby work behind the scenes to help Mitch bring down the firm, Mitch works like any other tax attorney in the weeks before the tax deadline. However, Mitch takes advantage of the chaos of tax season to copy files from Avery’s office using copy machines that are wired to the firm’s billing system. This is risky and is an avenue DeVasher could use to prove Mitch is working with the FBI.
