“Community Service Proposal”
After reading about community service clubs in Slacker, students will break into groups to come up with their own community service activity to present to the class.
You’ve read about the many ways kids can help their communities in Slacker. Now, imagine your class is a community service club like the P.A.G. You and your group will come up with a community service project to propose to the class. At the end of the assignment, the class will vote on which project they’d like to do.
o A typed list of your three reasons the project is important and a typed list of the materials involved. These can be on the same sheet of paper.
Teaching Suggestion: Recommended group size is 3-6 students. When introducing this project, you may need to ensure students understand that they are not required to perform the community service projects they are planning, thus projects do not need to be local, and they are free to use their imaginations. You might also want to ensure no two groups choose the same activity. The website linked in the Before Reading section of this guide is a good resource to use for students to learn what kinds of community service opportunities exist.
