Key Figures

Henry L. Roediger III

Henry L. Roediger III is a cognitive psychologist. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1973 and began a career researching memory, teaching at several accredited American research universities. He became the principal investigator of a team of scientists awarded a grant in 2002 to research applications of learning and memory science. This project greatly influenced Make It Stick.

Roediger III’s area of expertise lies with retrieval—how humans remember and access learned information. He received many accolades and titles for his contributions to the larger field of cognitive psychology—some notable awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Howard C. Warren medal from the Society of Experimental Psychologists. He also served as Chair of the Society of Experimental Psychologists as well as the Chair of the governing board of the Psychonomic Society, President of the Midwestern Psychological Association, and President of the Association for Psychological Science.

At the time of the book’s publication, Roediger III was the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a colleague of Mark A. McDaniel.

Mark A. McDaniel

Mark A. McDaniel received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder, his research focusing on memory—including its educational applications and failures. Some of McDaniel’s most important contributions are related to prospective memory—memory that allows a person to perform tasks in the future, like tasks on a to-do list—and cognitive aging. His work is supported by numerous major research organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Society of Experimental Psychologists, and NASA. He served as the President of the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association (Division 3).

At the time of the book’s publication, McDaniel was both a Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Both Roediger III and McDaniel were involved in many experiments cited and explained in the book, being colleagues at Washington University.

Peter C. Brown

Peter C. Brown is a writer and former management consultant. In the preface to Make It Stick, the authors introduce Brown as “a storyteller” (ix). These publications illustrate his expertise in management and also his ability to write and publish stories in the form of novels.
