Blitzkrieg

German for “Lightning war.” A military doctrine associated with the German army in World War II, and also adopted by Patton, which emphasized speed and concentration of forces.

Luftwaffe

The air force of Nazi Germany.

NKVD

Forerunner to the KGB, the secret police of the Soviet Union during the premiership of Joseph Stalin. The NKVD was responsible for internal repression as well as international intelligence gathering and espionage.

OSS

Forerunner to the CIA, the Office of Strategic Services was the wartime intelligence gathering and espionage body of the United States during World War II.

Red Army

The official name for the army and air forces of the Soviet Union, established after the October Revolution of 1917.

SS

Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary body in Nazi Germany that existed in parallel to the army. The SS possessed elite military units, conducted internal repression, and ran concentration camps.

USSR

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or Soviet Union for short. Brought formally into existence in 1922, following the Russian Revolution of October 1917. The Soviet Union incorporated Russia and satellite republics.

Volkssturm

A militia set up by Nazi Germany in the last months of World War II. It was comprised of men who previously been deemed too old, too young, or too infirm to fight in the regular army.

Wehrmacht

The armed forces of Nazi Germany, consisting of the army, navy, and air force.
