Part 1: “The Isle of Trisda”

Part 1, Chapter 6 Summary

Scarlett wakes up on a raft “with the feeling she’d lost something significant” (44). She realizes a good deal of time must’ve passed, and she’s alone in the sea with Julian. She slaps him for kidnapping her but feels instantly filled with remorse. She doesn’t want to be like her father. They are rowing towards Isla de los Sueños, the island of dreams, where Julian assures Scarlett that Tella is waiting for them. He says the raft is only big enough for two. Scarlett immediately panics about her father’s reaction and her upcoming wedding, but Julian tells Scarlett that Tella has taken care of that. Tella staged a kidnapping by leaving Scarlett’s room a mess with a ransom note, so their father can’t be mad at them.

Scarlett debates whether she can actually attend Caraval. Julian says he’ll do whatever she wants: if she wants to go back to Trisda, then she can go back. He challenges her to see if she’s really brave enough to find out if there’s more to life than safety. Scarlett reminds him of her father’s abuse and states that her marriage to the count is her “only chance at happiness” (50). Julian doesn’t accept Scarlett’s black-and-white way of looking at her situation and flirts with her by flinging water on her with the oars while she tries to decide if she will join her sister at Caraval. Finally, Scarlett concedes.

Julian and Scarlett row towards Master Legend’s private island, and Scarlett complains about Julian tipping more water on her legs. He insists this time it isn’t him. They discover there’s a hole in the boat. Julian instructs Scarlett to strip off her clothes. It’s the only way they’ll be able to swim in the icy water and make it to shore. Scarlett is very hesitant and at first refuses to undress in front of him. He strips down anyway and swims ahead without her. When he realizes she’s still struggling, Julian swims back to help her. Scarlett can swim but not with her heavy gown weighing her down. Realizing there’s no other option, she allows Julian to cut it off in a moment of brief intimacy. They swim to the shore, which is covered in snow. Tella isn’t there.

Part 1, Chapter 7 Summary

Scarlett wants to know where Tella is, and Julian states that perhaps he dropped her off somewhere else. Scarlett is unable to enjoy the beauty of the place since she’s consumed with worry about her sister. Between the snow and the fact that they’re dripping wet, Scarlett and Julian are freezing. Scarlett wants to stay outside and look for her sister, but Julian insists they can’t. They pass through a forest on a dirt path, which eventually turns into a cobblestone road that leads into a town. The town is filled with strange shops that sell magical and impossible items, like seeds to grow wishes and glasses that allow the wearer to see the future. Most of the shops are closed with bizarre signs like “Come back yesterday” (60), but one shop is always open: Casabian’s Clocks.

Scarlett and Julian head inside, where they find a note from Master Legend beside roses, fig bread, cinnamon tea, and clothes for each of them. Julian teases Scarlett about Legend’s interest in her. They turn away from each other to get changed into the clothes Master Legend left for them in the shop, eager to get warm. The dress Legend left for Scarlett appears quite plain and unattractive. She feels embarrassed when she turns back around to face Julian, especially since Julian’s outfit is perfectly tailored and stunning. She scolds him for stealing a pocket watch, but Julian deflects by pointing out that he can understand Legend’s interest in Scarlett. She looks at herself in the mirror, and the dress has transformed to fit her shape perfectly. She is taken aback by her own beauty in it and understands the dress is magical. Scarlett and Julian are about to leave the clock shop and carry on searching for Tella when a voice warns them that they may wish to exit another way

Part 1, Chapter 8 Summary

Scarlett thinks the person who warned her not to leave is the owner of the clock shop, Casabian. The man teases them for Julian’s theft, but soon, he admits he’s jesting and is really a man named Algie, not the owner of the shop. Algie offers Scarlett and Julian quicker passage into Caraval, since they only have a little time left to enter before the doors close for good. However, Scarlett must give up her voice for an hour if she wants to use the secret door Algie has opened. Julian rejects the offer and heads outside.

After a bit of debating about Algie’s offer, Scarlett refuses, as she doesn’t want to sacrifice her voice in case she needs to call out for Tella, and she chases after Julian. She has always “survived[ed] through caution” (71). She notices time moves differently here and almost panics because she doesn’t see Julian anywhere, and she knows they’re running out of time before Caraval starts and the doors close. However, Julian finds her again just in front of the grand wooden mansion with many balconies where Caraval is housed, and they enter the gates together.

Julian pretends to be Scarlett’s fiancé.

Jovan, a girl on a unicycle, checks their tickets and gives them a scripted warning about Caraval being just a game and to not take anything too seriously, no matter how real it seems. She shows them two paths: one that will allow them to watch the game and another that will let them play. Scarlett hesitates at first but decides to play, since she’s only planning to stay for one day.

Part 1, Chapters 6-8 Analysis

Scarlett has to make a series of challenging decisions regarding whether safety is worth more than adventure. Julian presents her this challenge first on the raft, and Scarlett goes against her usual nature by consenting to embark on an adventure. She figures this is still within her control: She’ll find Tella, and they’ll stay for a day before returning home. When their boat fills with water, Scarlett faces another decision: to stay within her conservative dress and drown or break her own traditional rules to survive. Scarlett tries to have it both ways, clinging to her heavy dress that weighs her down and trying to swim to shore. This moment acts as a metaphor for Scarlett’s internal struggle and how she clings to beliefs that no longer serve her, though she doesn’t realize this yet. Eventually, she realizes there isn’t a choice if she wants to live, and she breaks her own rules by allowing Julian to cut off her heavy dress.

The next choice occurs in Casabian’s shop when Algie offers her quicker entry into the game if she sacrifices her voice. Scarlett weighs her options carefully but once again defaults to her tendency toward caution. The final choice occurs when she enters Caraval with Julian, and though she hedges, she makes the choice Tella knew she would; she bravely pursues the adventure she has always denied herself. She may lie to herself and make concessions about how she won’t stay long or only needs to find Tella, but deep down, a part of Scarlett has hungered for this fantasy for so long, and even though she has suppressed it under layers of fear, her passion for life and belief in magic is still there, waiting to be rediscovered.
